Vista Chino (fromerly known as Kyuss Lives!) recently made a stop at Philly’s Underground Arts venue with Portland rock outfit Black Pussy and Philly’s own Kingsnake, as part of the band’s national 2013 tour.
For those just tuning in, Vista Chino was formed in 2010 by vocalist John Garcia, drummer Brant Bjork and bassist Nick Oliveri, all former members of influential rock band Kyuss. Belgium-born guitarist Bruno Fevery would round out the original line-up.
Prior to Vista Chino, Kyuss Lives! was formed as a touring act featuring the original Kyuss line-up excluding Josh Homme (QOTSA). A subsequent lawsuit filed by former Kyuss members Josh Homme and Scott Reeder would put an end to the Kyuss Lives! moniker and thus the formation of Vista Chino.
Vista Chino’s is currently supporting its debut album, Peace which Popmatters described by saying “Peace, is upon us and it is as close to a new Kyuss album as we are likely to get from the past members of the band—especially considering Oliveri left and has been replaced by Corrosion of Conformity’s Mike Dean, who contributed to the album. What folks tend to forget when it comes to Kyuss’s history is that Brant Bjork was as much of a creative force as Homme. In fact, it was the butting of heads between these two personalities over what direction to take Kyuss that caused Bjork’s departure from the band after …Sky Valley. So, what you hear on Peace may be in-line with the vision Bjork had for Kyuss before he left. In the past, Bjork’s drumming was such a wild affair; his Bill Ward-esque jazz swing and cascading fills were unstoppable. Bjork favours a mellower approach for Peace and as a result, Vista Chino’s sound is rhythmically loose and more laid back than Kyuss..”
This particular evening found all three acts poised for a great show from the retro rock sounds of Portland, OR’s Black Pussy to the psychedelic desert-rock movements of Kingsnake. A great turnout of Philly concertgoers ate up the rad riffage offered by Vista Chino and was hungry for seconds by the time the closing bells rang.
